Doing a quick google, I found this:

I've had a few situations where the sound card would start out muted
(last item on the list) and then when I started aumix it would reset to
whatever my aumix defaults were. Of course now that I reread the
thread, it looks like this isn't the case.
Is the right sound module loaded (according to the link it is
snd-intel8x0)?
If not try loading it by hand and see if audio then works. If it does,
then add the right lines to your /etc/modules.conf. If not, re-post.
