[lug] grabbing IP

I left the ifcfg-eth0 as it was:

DEVICE=eth0 
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp

I rebooted, 
It says:
bringing up loopback interface      OK
bringing up eth0 interface      OK

Loopback is up, eth0 is not.

I changed nothing and did:
 "service network restart" 
....same thing
BUT (does this mean anything?)
I do dhclient eth0  - It very happily located one of the gateways and got a dynamic IP.
I immediately do service network restart, it says:
shutting down eth0
...
Bringing up eth0
AND the dynamic IP is there.
