It sounds like you have a problem with either the tape or the drive.
Check for SCSI errors in your /var/log/messages.
The man only listed an example of 'amtapetype -f /dev/null' to generate
a tapetype definition, is it possible you are not sending the switches
it needs to complete the task against a real device?
