If you get a powered USB 2 hub, it will be able to do everything a card 
can, assuming you have USB 2 onboard your existing computer.  So, if 
you have USB 2, get a hub.  If you only have USB 1.1, get an add-on 
card to take advantage of faster USB.

(The powered part is important, if the hub does not have a power brick, 
there are certain peripherals that won't work, for me, my Wacom tablet 
or slide scanner.).
