I have the Umax Astra 610s scanner.  It worked well with the the
Adaptec 2940, too.  Until I upgraded Mandrake (I think it was 10.0). 
Then I started getting parity errors, or something like that.  Either
the hardware sprang a leak, or something changed in a driver
somewhere.  maybe the scanner was never quite right, but the older
drivers didn't mind.   Your experience makes me think that there is
something in the Mandrake kernel that makes these scanners freak out.

I haven't tried it with 10.1 because I spent $80 on a cheap Canon LiDE
30 USB scanner.  It works much better and is much smaller than the
Umax, so I haven't bothered to try the Umax lately.
