I've also run into similar things multiple times. I think the ALSA folks try too hard to turn on advanced features of the chipsets... They need to defualt to basics and let those people that need the advanced features turn them on, instead of the other way 'round...

I had to run alsamixer and disable some of the channels in order to
get audio working on my FC3 laptop. Something a bit weird going on
there... anyway, googling for things related to "fc3 audio" (and the
type of audio card or machine) yielded good results for me.
