SmartLink 5634 PCV modem (internal, real modem, about $30) has been 
reliable for me for several years (have 2).  Sadly I'm not sure you can 
get them anymore.

I really appreciated the setserial and /proc/pci instructions that made 
their setup program unnecessary.
