[lug] compact linux distributions

I'm looking for a fairly flexible, recently-maintained
compact distribution, hopefully based on Red Hat or
Debian.  I want to build a compact streaming media
player for the garage so I can listen to my mp3's
while I twist wrenches.  I've looked at muLinux and
Coyote Linux, but muLinux is fairly stale and doesn't
provide much flexibility for customisation or hardware
variety, and Coyote seems more focused on networking
than media appliances.  Most of the older compact
distros have disappeared or are not maintained any
more.
