Having just been in the market, I would say that you are right that
there are a lot more java jobs than C/C++ jobs, but I also would claim
that at least 90% of those jobs are for Server side java (J2EE), not
client side/desktop java.  If you want a job that might use some of
your math training, I'd bet on a C/C++ job.

Of course, the more languages you can claim on your resume, the
better, so I'm not telling you to stop learning Java.  Just be
prepared for most java jobs to not care about Swing at all.
