I just thought of something...in an earlier email someone mentioned that 
it seemed to be related to ACL's. Is it possible that the machines 
failing lack ACL support in their kernel, or else lack the ACL user land 
requirements? It might be useful to see if you get the same error with 
an ACL-enabled filesystem when the client machine has full ACL kernel 
and user land support, versus missing kernel and/or user land requirements.
