Have you gone through the troubleshooting process in:
   http://www.openoffice.org/FAQs/fontguide.html
section "Adding TrueType or Type1 fonts to OpenOffice.org"?

They've improved font installation a lot in OpenOffice, and font problems
are often a case of files in the wrong directories.
