This may not be an ideal answer, but you might want to try ps2pdf and
then use a pdf app like kpdf or xpdf.
The gs command itself has a lot of cryptic options you might want to
experiment with...I can't say in particular if any will help. Pay
particular attention to fonts though, I'll guess that if its taking that
long on one machine in comparison to another maybe it's trying to make
substitutions. See if the fonts look exactly the same on both a faster
machine and a slower machine (magnify a few characters by a very large
amount).
