Careful with this.

If the server machine has a slow CPU, and connectivity is fast, don't 
bother... you can beat the hell out of the server doing the compression 
stuff.

(Did some benchmarking on an old rsync server running on a P3 500 with 
512MB of RAM.  It was faster to rsync without compression on anything 
above a 1.0 MB/s link.)
