It's not the hardware or you wouldn't be able to install.  You managed 
to get the installer to boot, files written to disk, and now your boot 
loader can load the kernel, which chokes.

Try booting without failsafe.  Usually failsafe means "don't probe the 
hardware".  But I'd guess that without probing the kernel can't set up 
the right drivers and is guessing wrong how to talk to the SATA.
