Hardware profiles are supposed to work. See
http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/disks_dualmult_ws.html
Several years ago I had success with VMware and win98 as the vm
guest/dual boot with hardware profiles. Didn't have to worry about a
hardware-tied license though.
