I'm kinda odd in the compression realm.  I nearly exclusively use 7zip 
on my XP box, often in .7z format.  That meant I couldn't really use 
those files on Linux before p7zip appeared (unless I remembered to 
output bz2, gz, &c.).

Of course, because of that, I used pbzip2 (with tar) on my Linux boxes. 
  Maybe I should just settle on .zip, but the Gentoo ricer in me keeps 
reaching for max compression.
