Not entirely true. Clean signal at the frequencies required to drive
multi-megapixel displays is non-trivial.
Think about it this way: the latest monitors are the 30" LCD
behemoths, which are at least 4MP. Refreshing them with 24-bit data
at 60 frames per second yeilds
4MB * 24bpp * 60 = 5.76 Gbps
That's non trivial.
Granted, its failure should be binary (it either works or it doesn't)
but it's possible that a sufficiently cheap card / PHY and cable could
lead to a DVI-D connection that glitches or has other transient issues.
This is also a part of length limitations on the cable (just as with
any digital signally protocol, there are physical effects that limit
how far the signal can go and still be usable).
