I'm another happy Xfce user.  I think it compares favorably with Gnome
and Enlightenment (through E 0.16) which I used for some years
previously.

And, if you happen to use Fedora, the Xfce install is quite easy:

  sudo yum groupinstall XFCE

and you should be all set!
