First of all, if it's running hot to the touch it's probably running out of
spec temp-wise. Check the particular drives specs.

I had one of those IBM drives that everyone was winging about dieing years
ago, and I started getting errors on it. I decided to pull it and replace
it, and when I opened up the case to pull it I found it hot to the touch.
I checked the specs, and it was obviously (by feel) hotter than the max
operating temp. I had 3 open drive bays on that machine, and I just
covered them with cardboard, ran it a bit more and felt it and it was much
cooler. The drive that was reporting errors ran fine for at least a year
after that.

Usually if your drive is being remounted because of errors, you will see a
message in syslog/dmesg saying exactly that.

Thanks,
Sean
