My understanding is that Intel expected the Core 2 Duo to work with many
regular P4 boards "perhaps with as little as a BIOS upgrade". So, the BIOS
upgrade is definitely something I've heard.
If you really want low power, go with the Core Duo, for a system that will
run around .5 to .6 amps. One of the guys here in Fort Collins put
together an Athlon box when the Core 2 Duo came out. He was expecting to
get a Core 2, but the prices came out higher than originally anticipated,
and AMD reduced their prices significantly shortly before it to compete.
He got a $200-ish Athlon dual-core, and 7900GT video board. His rig
running at peak was pulling around 1.7 amps.
Don't know what the Core 2 Duo is going to pull for a whole system.
Thanks,
Sean
