[lug] Getting frustrated with gnuplot

A dumb question, but did you try the label_contours.awk script that 
Gnuplot has on it's script page:

It's not the greatest, but it does sort of label the contours.  Their 
example is a wee bit busy though (the textcolor=-1 can be...psychedelic).
