[lug] Distribution favorites?

I used KRUD (Red Hat/ Fedora) for several years but became annoyed as their 
distributions and KDE and KOffice became more and more limited and crippled, 
so I ordered my current laptop with SuSE installed.

I really like SuSE 10.0, but they shredded their nice admin tools in 10.1 in 
favor of lame Mono stuff (I had to deal with SLES 10.0, which has the 10.1 
admin tools at work. very annoying). And now Novell is being suicidally 
stupid (name one company that shook hands with Microsoft and didn't draw back 
a stump).

So... what distros with good KDE support do people recommend? 

I've downloaded Kubuntu and stuck it in a virtual machine, but the 
installation feels sort of fluffy and Microsofty. I need to see whether it 
can get to a more geeky feeling configuration without too much tweaking.
