That's what I've done in the past, but it seems even worse.  I always get
"lucky" and pick the mirrors that are just about to get abandoned, or which
have 6 hours of nightly maintenance downtime, or are at max capacity (at all
times except for when I test them).  I'm a very Murphy's Law kind of user
apparently.  The only thing that will make me happy is if apt has a dozen or
so top choices for mirrors, and automatically fails over (quickly) to the next
in the list when one fails.  Apt is not nearly fault-tolerant enough of mirror
failures for my taste.

I'll give that a try.  I had my own scripts from several years back before
netselect-apt existed that regenerated my sources list.  Hopefully
netselect-apt is an improvement, mine wasn't all that great.
