If he's the same guy who set up randomly assigned video device names,
I'll join you. This "feature" plays havoc with MythtTV when two
different types of tuner cards are installed.

Is a floppy drive installed on the system?  If so, does grub work if
you remove the "fd0" line from /boot/grub/device.map, and run the
install with the "--no-floppy" flag?
