FYI,

I just jumped back to the XP box via the KVM and the
problem appeared immediately.  As long as I stay on
the linux box at first boot it's fine.  Somehow a
signal must be generated by the kvm that screws
something up.

So it appears to me that the KVM must be the weak
link.

When I reboot tomorrow I'll try the "auto" driver and
see if that somehow magically fixes it.  PS/2 didn't
work.  

Other than that, I guess I'm out of luck.
