Bidirectional indicates the printer is able to answer questions about 
itself, e.g., what fonts it has resident. Useful with the IPP protocol. 
The fact that the printer is there, that it seemingly takes jobs, and 
then something happens to remove it makes me wonder if there is an 
incorrect protocol being used, or perhaps some sort of security 
feature.  Would be interested in seeing what the results are from the 
debug testing mentioned by Collins Richey.

One more test, if you have some form of pcl file (e.g., via print to 
file where the named printer setup is a pcl setup), would be to use lp 
next and use that. lp and ipp protocols use different ports. The thing 
I'm not sure of is how much interception cups does (since it provides lp 
and lpr now), but I'm thinking lp will always use the lp port (versus 
the ipp port).
