Not sure of THE proper way of doing this but you could always put this
in your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 but if your DHCP
server supplies this you could put it in /etc/rc.local I suppose.  Not
sure of your issue with not being able to open a new terminal tho.
You should still be able to do this regardless.

No this wasn't a dumb question!  Don't be so hard on yourself :-p
