 RHEL is the semi equivalent to the Ubuntu LTS or the debian stable releases, although not so out of date as debian. Support available for years. New releases about every 1.5 years.

I don't run it on a desktop, so not sure how it does there.

Fedora is not just a testbed for RHEL.
RHEL will have some proprietary stuff like Adobe reader/flash, IBM/Sun java available in the install rather than requiring separate downloads.
