[lug] wake on lan

I've been playing with wake-on-lan for Linux and wanted to check that
what I've discovered is consistent with others' experiences.

I have a dell cluster node and an hp workstation. If I run ethtool
eth0, both systems report they are capable of waking from a magic packet
(Supports Wake-on: g) and both claim that wake-on-lan is disabled
(Wake-on: d).

If I use shutdown -h now to turn off the dell node, I can use etherwake
to get it to turn back on. If I do the same on the hp workstation, it
will not turn back on. If I do a reboot instead of a shutdown and then
use the power button to turn it off, etherwake will wake it up. On the
hp, if I use "ethtool -s eth0 wol g" then I can wake it back up.

So, it seems that whether or not a system will wake up is dependent on
how the BIOS implements wake-on-lan and implementations vary widely. Is
that an accurate representation of the state of things?

Hugh
