Ahh, just saw your follow up and my answer for SquirrelMail is:

Set it up to run over SSL, and I doubt you'll have any problems.  Your  
main "holes" would then be holes in Apache and bad variable handling  
in the SM code, if any.  Which is doubtful most of the time... both  
have good track records, as long as they're kept patched as needed.
