Another possible explanation comes to mind. FREE makes for a faster,
hassle-free transaction. One can get something for free in very little
time. You simply avoid the whole, "Do I have any cash? Exact change? Do I
want $0.86 jingling around in my pocket?"
Of course, maybe they somehow controlled for this in the experiment, but he
doesn't say.
