See, that's what you get for having used the real thing. :-)

 From the man page:

-e      Don't send empty mails.  If the body is empty skip the mail.

so I thought it was what you were looking for.  It seems to work as 
advertised but you're right, this mailx doesn't have the features of the 
original.
