best tip out of the entire bunch regardless of where you stand.  this lets
dad try before investing a lot of otherwise wasted time.

fwiw, you might be able to make that live disk somewhat customizable as
well.  i think there are ways to allow it to write to local drives if you
tweak them a bit.. that's probably a pita but another self-contained
option.  however, the boots will probably be slow..
