Just a followup:  turns out it was a simple feat.  The bug is fixed, at
least for me.  I downloaded the intel driver and built it and libdrm (a
prerequisite) based on the information at the IntelLinuxGraphics.org web
site.  Then it was just a matter of pointing the xorg.conf file at the
new driver.
