You don't have to choose any particular filesystem for encryption.  The
dm-crypt module can make any block device encrypted.

It's useful for backup drives if you like to use rsync or rdiff-backup
instead of a fancy backup program.

I have intended to run up a custom initramfs for dm-crypt on my Linux
laptop for a while, but never quite get around to it.
