Someone at the last BLUG meetng asked afterwards how to boot up Ubuntu
without seeing the mesmerizing orange bar.
Edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst and replace splash with nosplash
Actually, the advice I saw said to remove it, but putting nosplash
worked and it leaves a placeholder in case you want to go back and
change it.
Doing that, I see that my hanging on boot is caused by a USB device not
responding. Now to track down where that's getting logged to see if I
can find out what, exactly, causes this problem.
