Anyone know offhand how to copy video from a camcorder (tape) to disk 
over USB?

The camcorder is a Panasonic PV-GS35 (USB ID 04da:231a).  It seems to be 
well supported by UVC.

Kino seemed like a good answer but maybe it only does firewire and I 
only have USB cable.

VLC may do capture but I don't know how to set it up.

I don't care at this point about file formats or anything fancy, just 
want to get the video off the tape.

I'd do more research but I'm likely not to be able to install what I 
need after tomorrow so a short howto would be appreciated.  And I 
thought there were links in the archive to articles about this but I 
couldn't find them.
