Hi Luke.

Have you tried the freezer trick?  My gf's mom had a disk drive die in the
same manner.  We put it in the freezer for 45 minutes, then took it out,
connected it to the computer and downloaded as much data as possible.  I
was floored by how well it worked and that it worked at all.
