[lug] Perl question: how to print embedded metacharacters

The Perlitically Correct version's about 10x faster.

Both do bizarre things with bizarre data, which is why Matthew's way right
about checking input: garbage in, garbage out.

While playing with these two programs and some variants, a little, and using
the bash man page for input, I filled an entire directory with filenames in
Chinese.
