[lug] Laptop with external screen?

I'm getting pretty close with nvidia-settings (Thanks, Ken!).  The
tricky bit is that I have to leave nvidia-settings running in order to
switch displays.  If I start nvida-settings with a "ghost" external
monitor, it'll usually pop up on that screen, which isn't connected.

The problem with nvida-settngs is that it doesn't retain my
arrangement. It aligns the tops of the screens instead of the bottoms.
 The only way to change that is to restart X.
