Probibly a year or so ago to build a kernel for a client that wanted a
particular tcp patch that was not yet upstream backported to their
current kernel. 

I very seldom build custom kernels anymore. The Fedora/RHEL/CentOS ones
work just fine for my needs. If I need a newer one, I can almost always
snag a newer build from the Fedora buildsystem that the kernel
maintainers already have built. ;)
