I used jfax/j2.com for about four years with good results.  They give
you a local phone number and it acts like a fax and voice mail answering
machine.  Voicemails get converted to .wav and sent to you, faxes got
converted to .tiff and sent to you.

Our primary purpose for getting this was to avoid getting another phone
line.  A side effect was that all our faxes were archived in our email
system and could easily be forwarded (as mail) to other people: so no
dealing with more paper and much less having to feed that paper back
through a fax in order to resend to someone else.

Cost was about $12-14 a month and Linux friendly.
