I think most (if not all) of the user-side things you may want to do
are allowed with a custom API. Which is a java-ish (not really java,
and that's why the Oracle's lawsuit is hopeless) Android-specific
thing, not linux-posix-gnu stuff we are accustomed with.

Yes. But here you don't get compatible/portable handsets even on
networks that should be compatible (e.g. iPhone on T-mobile, Sprint
with that-other-carrier)

Yes, I see that.... of course they try, but being accustomed to what I
had until 3 years ago, I have troubles refraining from ranting my "ole
good time in Italy". Sorry about that.
