I used to have a dual boot system and I ran the Windows partition in a VM on Linux. Not exactly
what Nate is asking.
But the VM hardware looked different from the real hardware. There's a doc on vmware.com that
explains how to set up another hardware profile so that when booted in the VM the first time Windows
does its mini-setup to configure that profile.
As long as you set up the other profile before you move hardware it works well enough.
