I use the x11vnc server, typically over ssh transport. It's
distro-bundled and tends to survive upgrades without fuss. And it
seems to work well with a variety of popular cross-platform VNC
clients like TightVNC. With some of the more advanced negotiable
compression schemes, performance is quite good (assuming a half-decent
broadband connection). I really like that it will connect to a
running local session, so I can just leave stuff on my work screen and
pick up where I left off.
