You could, but you don't have to.  In the original poster's case the
system was used for XBMC and personal tasks.  Why switch users to switch
tasks if you don't have to?  Switching users restarts the desktop to
pick up desktop personalizations and that takes time.  Switching
workspaces just updates the display.

Truth is, I never switch users.  On my media box I have my own user for
doing system updates (which I use by remote login) and the user I
configured for media play which has a black theme to reduce the
"desktop" appearance a bit.  'Course, that doesn't help if I still have
a bunch of panel icons flowing in an out on the top and bottom.  But
it's slightly better.
