[lug] linux phone switching system

Hi,

I'm interested in using linux to handle phone lines ...
  - answering calls
  - making calls
  - joining lines to make conference calls
  - very simple voice recognition

I'm a linux software developer, but know zip about phone systems.

Any recommendations on hardware, software, or books/resources
to learn?
