[lug] Persistent Naming in the 2.4 kernel

I have an embedded system that is not easily upgraded to the 2.6
kernel. It is kernel 2.4.26. This was before udev, and I believe even
before sysfs. I need to have persistent naming of at least one USB
thumb drive. Does anyone remember if this was possible, and if it was
can you tell me where to look to figure out how to do it? From what I
can ascertain this is from April of 2004.
