Sorry to drop in as a just-lurker: let's not forget - it isn't grub2
thats insane, it's ubuntu's grub setup monstrosity [1]. There's nothing
that stops you writing a grub configuration file and deactivate the grub
updating "magic". Have a look at '/boot/grub/grub.cfg' for a good
starter.
