If the volume groups are activating and the logical volumes are showing up
in /dev/mapper with out any intervention the corruption is probably in the
file system or there is problem spot on the drive.
Does dd give any IO errors when the logical volume is used as the input
file?

Thanks everyone,
To be clear the disk is mounted on another Linux system now. The rest of
the hardware is old enough to just send it to the big bit bucket in the sky.
